50 Things Horseback Riding Has Taught Me
  1. No matter how hard you fall, you sure as hell better get up, dust yourself off, and try again.
  2. No matter how much pain you are in, put a smile on your face and keep moving forward.
  3. Never show any weakness or fear. Ever.
  4. Mental toughness is just as important, if not more, than physical strength.
  5. When faced with an obstacle, do not run out, it is better to try and fail than to have not tried at all.
  6. It may take multiple tries before you get over the obstacle, and that is okay.
  7. Sometimes falling face first and eating dirt is the best thing for you.
  8. We are all going to make mistakes, but it is how you deal with those mistakes that matter.
  9. Hard work pays off.
  10. Nothing great will come to you over night; it may take, weeks, months, or even years.
  11.  “A smooth sea never made a skillful sailor.” The same applies to horses. The most difficult horses make the best riders.
  12. There is always going to be somebody better than you.
  13. There is always room for improvement.
  14. Trust is required, but trust does not mean you should let your guard down.
  15. No rider and no horse are perfect.
  16. If you work hard, you can surprise yourself.
  17. Sometimes you need a bit of tough love.
  18. Criticism can hurt, but take it with a grain of salt.
  19. Never take anything for granted.
  20. Always give your 110% in anything you do.
  21. Your best will not always be good enough.
  22. Do not let the small stuff break you.
  23. Do not let the big stuff break you either.
  24. Confidence is key. If you are not confident in yourself, no one else will be, including your horse.
  25. Do not be too cocky either though.
  26. Always be aware of your surroundings.
  27. Every step and each second matter- they can truly be the difference between life and death.
  28. Compliments are the most meaningful when they are given rarely.
  29. Every horse you ride has a lesson to teach you.
  30. A lot of the time, it is your fault.
  31. When it is your fault, do not beat yourself up over it.
  32. The ability to adjust to every horse you ride and any circumstance you are placed in is key.
  33. In the most stressful situations, you have to relax.
  34. If you feel your horse is about to kill you, you should relax.
  35. Breathe deeply; everything may or may not be alright.
  36. Every little movement you make and everything little thing you do matters.
  37. Do not be a passenger, be a pilot.
  38. Do not be an idiot. Seriously, you are dealing with a 1000lb animal. Do not be an idiot.
  39. Do not take shit from anybody.
  40. You are not going to always know everything, so listen to what your trainer has to say.
  41. It is okay to ask for help or advice.
  42. Life is really fragile.
  43. Sometimes the biggest and strongest things break really easily.
  44. Do not look down on the less skillful/beginner riders, you were like them at a point too.
  45. Winning blue ribbons is great, but you cannot forget to cherish the small stuff; sometimes they mean the most.
  46. Take your riding, and life in general step by step, stride by stride; it is never good to jump ahead before you are ready.
  47. A lot of the time, you are not going to be a winner.
  48. Never let your peers’ achievements make you feel like less of a rider.
  49. Listen to your horse, they will tell you when they are hurting, or if something is not right.
  50. “It’s a sport that we chose because we love it, but it’s also a sport that we chose because we love the animal…. It’s not like breaking a hockey stick or breaking a tennis racket, for us we become very close with this animal and have great respect for they do for us.” –Eric Lamaze
